Time for Something a Little Different

This week, we're taking a different approach. I've gathered random thoughts on self-leadership over the past few weeks, and I couldn't quite connect them all without writing a novel. But for those who know me, you're aware of my passion for creativity and how I love to enhance stories with visuals. So this week's Leadership in Focus newsletter is a blend of visuals and text to share these 10 unorthodox self-leadership principles.

Make a Commitment:

Stop overthinking and commit. Sign up for that course, marathon, meeting, or message. Action always trumps intention.

Discover Your Capabilities:

Don't limit yourself before you've truly tried. Give it your all, not a half-hearted attempt to have an excuse.

Get Your Hands Dirty:

Beautiful gardens don't cultivate themselves. To create something magnificent, you need to get your hands in the dirt, plant seeds, prune, cultivate, and embrace the process.

Leadership is Human:

To lead effectively, take time to know people, understand what drives them, respect each other, and maintain honesty.

Embrace Diversity:

You can't win a baseball game with 26 pitchers. Diversity in talent, skills, thought, background, and identity is crucial for success. Build a strong team piece by piece.

"If I Can, I Will":

Ownership and empowerment aren't assigned. Stop saying, "it's not my job." If you can solve a problem, then do it.

Accountability Matters:

There are only 2 "get out of jail free cards" in Monopoly. Leaders need to be patient when developing their team members, but your job is to hold people accountable for their performance and results. You can't give your team indefinite passes when they come up short.

Confront When Necessary:

Leaders sometimes need to confront others. Leadership is about making others better. Embrace the responsibility and have those difficult conversations.

Think Legacy:

Shift from "What's in it for me?" to thinking about your legacy. Focus on empowering others to achieve lofty goals and making the world a better place.

Don't Stop Believing:

Hold onto your faith in your goals, yourself, your team, your capabilities, and your vision. The journey may have twists, but unwavering faith is the key to success.

Closing Thoughts:

Leadership is not about being the boss. It’s about being the bridge.”
