"You have been criticizing yourself for years, and it hasn't worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens."

~ Louise L. Hay

We all have an inner critic, that nagging voice that undermines our self-confidence and belittles our achievements. Dealing with this internal bully can be challenging, but it's essential to learn how to tame it effectively. In this article, we'll explore steps to quiet the inner critic and regain control of our thoughts and emotions.

Stepping into Uncharted Territory

A few years ago, I found myself in a challenging work situation. I was given the responsibility of leading a team in developing a new product category within a highly regulated space. Full of optimism and confidence, I believed I could replicate my previous track record of success. However, things didn't go as planned, and our team struggled to gain momentum. As the leader, I shouldered the weight of our lack of success, and that's when my inner critic decided to set up residence in a big way.

This inner critic is like the living embodiment of Owen Wilson's character, Dupree, from the movie "You Me and Dupree." Just like Dupree, it invades my mind, masquerading as a helpful friend while offering no real solutions of its own. It embodies the essence of every so-called expert who readily dispenses advice but fails to apply it in their own life, often making things worse instead of better. Much like Dupree, this inner critic's presence can turn a situation from bad to worse after moving in.

"The only person who can pull me down is myself, and I'm not going to let myself pull me down anymore."

~ C. JoyBell C.

As we grapple with this persistent inner critic that seems to magnify our doubts and insecurities, it's time to take back the reins and embark on a journey of self-empowerment. Let's delve into actionable steps that can help us silence the negative voice within and foster a mindset of self-compassion and self-belief. By implementing these strategies, we can gradually diminish the influence of the inner critic and nurture a more positive and supportive inner dialogue. Here are some effective techniques to defeat the voice of the inner critic and reclaim our inner strength:

Keep a Record and Review:

During this challenging period, keeping a journal to record my journey, wins, and moments of growth was enormously helpful. This written record became a powerful reminder of what I had accomplished, helping to counter the inner critic's negative narrative.

Build Momentum:

Feeling stuck, my life was starting to unravel in various ways - my health suffered, my weight peaked, and negativity seeped into my work life. However, recognizing the importance of momentum, I set a SMART goal for myself to lose weight and improve my fitness. Over three months, I shed over 30 lbs, and this success helped me regain confidence and find new ideas to build momentum in other areas of my life.

Put It on Silent Mode:

When my inner critic resurfaced with its hurtful commentary, I learned to treat it like an online hater. I visualized deleting its comments and blocking its voice, understanding that its purpose was to hurt, not help.

“Hire” a Team of Inner Coaches:

Inspired by how successful athletes build a team of coaches and trainers, I applied the same concept to silence my inner critic. I sought positive voices and mentors who could remind me of my strengths and champion my growth. Additionally, I invested in self-development and learning to boost my confidence and knowledge.

Be Open and Enlist Others:

Realizing that I didn't have to battle the inner critic alone, I reached out to trusted individuals within my inner circle. By sharing my struggles, they reminded me of my track record of success and helped me realign with my strengths. It's important to curate this inner circle wisely to avoid inviting negative thinkers who might reinforce the inner critic's voice.

Trust Yourself:

In moments of doubt, I learned to trust the skills and knowledge I had accumulated over the years. Even if progress wasn't immediately evident, I believed that experience and practice would eventually yield results. Trusting in myself allowed evidence of growth to surface and gradually silence the inner critic.

Closing Thoughts:

"Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love."

~ Brené Brown

My journey in quieting the inner critic has been ongoing, and even as I write this article, that voice tries to pop in. However, I've learned to quickly brush it off. While there might not be a foolproof way to silence the inner critic entirely, incorporating these steps into my life has made a significant difference for me. Remember, embracing self-compassion and self-belief can help you combat negative self-talk, unlock your potential, and keep the inner critic at bay.

Apply the Learning This Week:

Ready to put the concepts from this article into action? Here are three practical steps you can take this week:

Celebrate Your Awesomeness 🌟

Take a moment to reflect on the past week in your journal. Identify at least five instances where you did something awesome that you're genuinely proud of. Celebrate these achievements, big or small, and recognize your strengths.

Set a SMART Goal 🎯

It's time to take proactive steps towards growth. Set a SMART Goal for the next phase of your journey. Remember, SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, if you want to increase knowledge in a specific subject:

  • Specific: Clearly define the subject or topic you want to focus on. Be precise and detailed.

  • Measurable: Determine how you'll track your progress, such as hours of study, books read, or course completion.

  • Achievable: Set a realistic goal that challenges you without being overwhelming.

  • Relevant: Ensure your goal aligns with your broader interests and aspirations.

  • Time-bound: Establish a specific timeframe for achieving your goal, like within three months.

Silence the Inner Critic 🙉

Be mindful of your inner critic and its negative self-talk. When you hear that voice creeping in, deliberately counter it with reasons why it's mistaken. Embrace the power of positive thinking. And here's a tip: when you successfully silence your inner critic, smile! Let that smile reinforce your confidence and celebrate your victory over the internal troll.

Remember, taking these steps will propel you forward on your journey of growth and self-improvement. You've got this! 💪
