Top 5 Ways a Leader Can Positively or Negatively Impact Organizational Culture

In an ever-changing world and dynamic business environment, our leaders play a crucial role in shaping culture. The impact of a leader on the culture cannot be underestimated, as it directly influences employee engagement, productivity, and overall organizational success. I have been fortunate enough throughout my life and career to witness various forms of leadership. Whether it was in my role as a parent, coach, or within the different organizations I have been a part of, one thing remains certain: leadership sets the tone for the experiences we have.

One of the most influential leaders in my career is retiring soon. As I reflect on the incredible experience I had with him during my time in Switzerland, it makes me contemplate the stark differences between that period and other times in my life when I didn't have the same solid and secure foundation.

In this article, we will explore the top five ways a leader can either positively or negatively impact the culture of an organization, and the importance of cultivating a positive culture for long-term success. By understanding the significant role leaders play in shaping culture, we can better appreciate the profound influence they have on employee engagement, productivity, and overall organizational outcomes.

Leading by Example:

"People may doubt what you say, but they will believe what you do." - Lewis Cass

One of the most influential ways a leader can shape organizational culture is by leading through their actions. Based on our own experience, we know that things are often caught and not taught.  A leader who consistently demonstrates the values and behaviors they expect from their team sets a powerful example. By exhibiting integrity, transparency, and accountability, they foster a culture of trust and inspire employees to follow suit. Conversely, leaders who disregard ethical standards or display inconsistent behavior can undermine trust and erode the fabric of the organization.  The idea of “do what I say, and not what I do” is nonsense.  Actions and modelling the desired behaviors are key.

Effective Communication:

"Communication works for those who work at it." - John Powell

Someone once asked me what the Silver Bullet was to organizational success.  I don’t believe there is one, but the closest thing might be communication.  It lies at the heart of a healthy organizational culture. A leader who communicates clearly, transparently, and frequently establishes a strong foundation for collaboration and teamwork. Open and honest communication encourages employees to voice their opinions, share ideas, and address concerns, fostering a culture of inclusion and innovation. On the other hand, a leader who fails to communicate effectively, withholds information, or miscommunicates, can create a culture of confusion, mistrust, and disengagement.

Empowering and Developing Employees

"The best leaders empower others to lead." - Bill George

Great leaders recognize the importance of empowering their employees. By delegating authority, providing autonomy, and fostering a learning environment, leaders enable their team members to grow, make decisions, and take ownership of their work. This not only boosts employee morale and engagement but also cultivates a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. Conversely, leaders who micromanage, stifle creativity, or neglect employee development hinder the growth potential of their team and contribute to a culture of disempowerment and stagnation.

Recognizing and Rewarding Performance:

"The more you recognize and celebrate excellence, the more it grows." - Oprah Winfrey

Acknowledging and appreciating employee contributions is a fundamental aspect of a positive organizational culture. Far too often we assume that people understand our gratitude and appreciation for our efforts.  Leaders who recognize and reward exceptional performance and achievements inspire a sense of pride and motivation among their team members. By fostering a culture of recognition and celebration, leaders encourage a high-performance environment where employees feel valued and motivated to excel. Conversely, leaders who fail to acknowledge or appreciate the efforts of their employees can create a culture of demotivation, resentment, and disengagement.

Embracing Diversity and Inclusion:

"The power of diversity can only be unleashed and its benefits reaped when we recognize the value of each individual." - Michelle Bachelet

Inclusive leaders understand the value of diversity and actively work to create an inclusive culture within their organization. By fostering a culture that embraces different perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences, leaders encourage collaboration, creativity, and innovation. They promote a sense of belonging among employees, which leads to higher employee engagement and retention. In contrast, leaders who ignore or marginalize diversity can contribute to a culture of bias, exclusion, and limited perspectives, which hinder organizational growth and success.

Closing Thoughts:

Leaders have a profound impact on organizational culture, and their actions and behaviors can either shape a positive and thriving work environment or create a negative and toxic one. By leading by example, communicating effectively, empowering employees, recognizing performance, and embracing diversity and inclusion, leaders can create a culture that fosters engagement, collaboration, and innovation. Investing in a positive culture not only enhances employee satisfaction and productivity but also strengthens the overall success and reputation of the organization.
