Your Most Valuable Currency: Are You Spending Your Energy Wisely?

“Energy flows where attention goes.”

– Tony Robbins

In our modern world, there’s a constant emphasis on managing finances and building savings. While those are undeniably important, there’s another form of currency that is arguably even more critical: our energy.

We’ve all heard the saying, “Energy flows where the attention goes.” But how often do we pause to evaluate where our energy is going—and what it’s doing to us in return? Energy is a finite resource, and unless we engage in activities that recharge us or spend time with people who uplift us, that resource can run dry.

The Hard Lesson of Giving Too Much

For much of my life, I prided myself on giving my all to everything and everyone. I thought that was a badge of honor, a marker of success. But in hindsight, it became my tragic flaw. Pouring out energy without replenishment left me running on empty. Eventually, I hit bottom. I was forced to step back, reevaluate my life, and confront a harsh truth: my energy was being drained by “energy vampires” and external factors I had no control over.

That low point became a turning point. It taught me to protect and prioritize my energy. I realized I needed to do regular “energy audits” to ensure I was aligning my energy with my goals and values.

Conducting Your Energy Audit

An energy audit doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does need to be intentional. Each month, I take a moment to reflect and ask myself:

  • Where am I focusing my attention? Am I dwelling on problems I can’t solve or investing in areas that truly matter?

  • Is this within my control? There’s immense freedom in releasing what you can’t change.

  • Who is in my inner circle? Am I surrounding myself with people who energize and inspire me—or with those who drain me?

  • How can I spend more time with people and activities that pour into me? Similarly, how can I pour energy into others in a meaningful way?

This process has been transformational. It’s helped me cultivate relationships, habits, and routines that don’t just preserve my energy but expand it.

The Energy You Give Is the Energy You Get

One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned is that energy isn’t just something we receive—it’s something we create. The universe, I believe, matches our energy.

When we show up with optimism, positivity, and a willingness to give our best, we find that same energy reflected back to us in opportunities, relationships, and experiences. On the flip side, when we dwell in negativity or focus on what’s wrong, we start seeing more of the same.

This isn’t just about a “good vibes only” mentality. It’s about being accountable for the frequency we’re putting out. What kind of energy are you contributing to the world?

The Bottom Line

“You cannot control the direction of the wind, but you can adjust your sails.”

– Jimmy Dean

Energy is our most vital currency, and how we spend it will shape the quality of our lives. By focusing on activities and people that recharge us, by protecting our energy from unnecessary drains, and by being intentional about the energy we give to others, we can create a life that feels not just sustainable but abundant.

Take a moment today to ask yourself: Where is your energy going? And more importantly, is it going to the right places?
